Situated on the edge of Saddleworth’s rolling hills, Tame Vale House marks the beginning of a phased transformation of a 1990s home into something warmer, lighter, and more refined. For a couple in their fifties with grown children and dogs, the brief was to create an entrance that set the tone for the rest of the renovation — welcoming yet sculptural, timeless yet modern.
Once dark and dated, the double-height hallway was reimagined with a focus on natural light, material honesty, and proportion. A new oak staircase with bespoke black metal balustrades creates a striking architectural gesture, its linear rhythm softened by a shell capiz chandelier suspended above. The floor was re-laid in a diamond-cut marble pattern, introducing a sense of craftsmanship and quiet grandeur to the space.
At the heart of the redesign is balance — between statement and subtlety, tradition and freshness. A seating area on the landing invites pause and connection, positioned to frame views of the chandelier and the landscape beyond. The colour palette was drawn from the client’s own artwork, creating cohesion between personal history and new design. Thoughtful details, such as cladding the bulkhead above the basement in marble with textured panelling, transform functional challenges into moments of visual interest.
This project represents the essence of Galatea’s approach — sculptural composition, grounded materiality, and a belief that every detail, however small, can elevate the experience of daily life.
