After months of planning, hard work, and a few compromises, our kitchen has finally transformed into a space that reflects the charm of English cottage interiors while embracing modern functionality. The final phase – adding finishing touches like countertops, a custom extractor hood, and a backsplash – brought our dream kitchen to life.
In this post, we’ll explore how we completed this journey, the lessons we learned along the way, and our plans for making this space even more functional and beautiful in the future. Whether you’re an interior design enthusiast or embarking on your own renovation, this post is filled with ideas and inspiration for creating a timeless and functional kitchen.
Installing Countertops

One of the most impactful upgrades was installing countertops. For nearly eight months, we made do with temporary surfaces, which made this moment even more rewarding.
Why we chose Quartz:
- Durability Meets Elegance: Quartz is non-porous, durable, and easy to maintain – perfect for a busy kitchen. While we loved the idea of marble, quartz was the more practical choice for our budget and lifestyle.
- A Timeless Neutral Look: We opted for plain white quartz, providing a clean, minimalist backdrop that complements the neutral, earthy palette inspired by the Saddleworth Moors.
Working with DIY Kitchens made the process seamless. A representative conducted a site visit to ensure precise measurements, eliminating any guesswork. Within two weeks, the countertops were installed, and the transformation was immediate. The sleek quartz surface tied the entire space together, enhancing the kitchen’s functionality and aesthetic.
A Custom Extractor Hood

To create a bespoke, cohesive look, we designed and built a custom extractor hood. Initially, we planned for a square design with a wooden beam, but we pivoted to a curved hood for a softer, more elegant appearance.
Built using plasterboard and wood, the curved hood adds a subtle sculptural element that feels both modern and timeless. On either side of the hood, we added built-in niches for storage and decorative items. These small details brought balance and personality to the space. By concealing the gap behind the tall cabinets and framing the range, the hood became a centerpiece that elevates the entire kitchen.

The curved hood was a design decision that blended current trends, like arches, with a classic, custom-made look that enhanced the English cottage aesthetic.
Adding Depth with a Backsplash
No kitchen is complete without a backsplash, and after much debate, we chose taupe Zellige tiles to add texture, warmth, and practicality.

Why we chose Zellige tiles:
- A Handcrafted Look: The handmade texture of zellige tiles creates a reflective surface that brings depth and movement to the space.
- A Subtle Earthy Tone: The taupe tiles, with their warm brown and grey undertones, perfectly complement the neutral palette, adding character without overwhelming the design.
- Durability and Ease of Maintenance: While we considered a minimalist bare wall, tiles were the more practical choice for cleaning and long-term durability.
The taupe Zellige tiles paired beautifully with the plain white quartz countertops, balancing modern simplicity with rustic charm.
Lessons Learned During the Renovation
As the kitchen came together, we reflected on the lessons we learned throughout this transformative journey:
- Invest in Quality Materials: Waiting to save for high-quality countertops and backsplash tiles was worth the patience. These elements not only enhanced the aesthetic but also ensured durability.
- Be Flexible with Design: Adapting to challenges, like choosing a curved hood instead of a square one, allowed us to create a design that worked better for the space.
- Small Details Make a Big Impact: Features like unlacquered brass hardware, glass pendant lights, and the bespoke niches in the hood added personality and charm, making the kitchen feel uniquely ours.
Future Plans for the Kitchen

While our kitchen feels complete in many ways, we still have a few updates planned to enhance its functionality and aesthetic:
- A Brass Hot Water Tap: We plan to replace our temporary chrome tap with an unlacquered brass hot water tap. This will not only match the cabinet hardware but also eliminate the need for a kettle (especially after Lewis accidentally dropped and dented ours!)
- Painting Internal Doors: To create a more seamless look and avoid clashing with the various wood species in the space, we plan to paint the internal doors to match the walls. This subtle update will make the space feel more cohesive and balanced.
- Adding a Glass Wall: To further define the snug and kitchen areas, we plan to install a glass wall between the two spaces. This addition will provide separation while maintaining the flow of natural light, adding both character and functionality to the overall design.
- A Functional Island: Replacing our farmhouse table with a custom island is a long-term goal. It will provide additional storage, seating, and a practical workspace, making the kitchen even more versatile.

Initially, we envisioned the smaller L-shaped section of the room as a dining area. However, after living in the space, we realised it worked better as a cosy snug – a relaxed space to sit, read, or chat with guests. This change has important implications for the overall layout:
- Seating Consideration: With the snug replacing the dining table, we plan to ensure the future kitchen island includes functional seating for casual meals or entertaining. This will maintain the practicality of the space without sacrificing comfort.
- Character and Comfort: By transforming the dining area into a snug, we can layer in softer furnishings like armchairs, rugs, and cushions, further enhancing the inviting, English cottage feel.
Celebrating the Finished Kitchen
Now that the countertops are installed, the backsplash is complete, and the custom extractor hood is in place, our kitchen has become the heart of our home. Hosting feels effortless, and we love how the space combines functionality, timeless design, and personal touches.

This Christmas, we’ll be decorating the kitchen and hosting family and friends in a space that feels truly ours. It’s a reminder that a kitchen isn’t just a functional space – it’s where memories are made, meals are shared, and life happens.
